Trying some digital painting again

I was messing around with Affinity Photo. Getting back into a little digital painting because I’ve been seeing it a fair bit on instagram and my friend brings it up now and again whenever we hang out.

It was kinda fun.

I don’t like doing digital stuff a lot because there’s a bit of a disconnect with the drawing surface and the behavior of the tools compared to regular drawing or painting. But it is fun to mess around with once in a while. Guess there’s also the ‘no pressure’ aspect, too.

Quick thoughts on updating my painting process

I’ve been writing out some thoughts in notepad. Hopefully, it’ll help me focus my attention a bit and get me ready to work on a piece.

i’m thinking about how to make a painting

i’m just writing things out because i’m coming off watching videos and playing a game
transitioning at the moment to something more productive, i guess
i’m also pretty hungry

i want to start a new painting
building the structure up with some lines
getting things placed and sorted
then blocking things in
nice and heavy
thick paint
use the palette knife
put it in fast
move quickly
large arm movements
use a lot of paint
a lot more than i have been lately
like when i was first painting 10 years ago

i need to change the way i paint
i don’t like the way i do things currently
i’m too precious with the paint
i keep feeling and thinking i need to do it more traditionally
like how i’ve been learning and practicing it as of recently
from the class and workshops i’ve been taking
but i should just use those bits to supplement what i’ve already been doing all along
just use it sparingly with the rest of the way i do things
and build some nuance in the colors and values
but do it faster
broader strokes

I’m piecing together an artist statement about the kind of work I’m making and trying to make. It’s still very rough.

i’m trying to make art
it’s loose
dark
ill-defined
about my own imagination
dreams, hopes, wishes, desires
i’m constructing my images from fragments of my experiences with pieces of things i make up to fill the gaps
hoping to make something coherent
but still have enough mystery
enough to establish some idea and overarching concept
but enough room for people to interpret it their own way
a reflection
from me to you”

Something to that effect. I still have to refine the wording, I think. Make it into a more acceptable format for professional human consumption.

I am noticing I prefer darker images and paintings. So I’m going down that route more as I work. Not necessarily thematically or content, but more the setting is dark. Because it’s quiet. Serene. Peaceful. It gives me a moment to just take in the world without hearing all of the riff-raff of the world during the day.

And writing out my thoughts in this blog form is pretty nice as well. Maybe I should do it more often.

Current Affairs

I'm still thinking up what I should be adding.. For now, the most current work and happening I'm getting into are posted on my instagram. 

I'm going ask around on what people want to see more of from me: what they want to know about, process, work, what I'm getting into, etc.  Hopefully, I'll be able to update with more regularity as I smooth out what I am updating about.

Came across an old photo

I had taken a long time ago.  I remember walking with some friends around Chicago at night on a randomly selected day during the winter.  We went to various places and did somethings here and there, but it was mostly to walk and take some photos.  I'm not sure where we did stop by, but we did go to a show my sister was helping set up.

It's kinda fun to see something random for years ago and how the things I like making now relate.

Setting up

I'm working on organizing and figuring out the work I want to show off.  I'm trying to narrow down the look I want as well as the subject matter.  Also, I'm looking to arrange content in a certain way.

I'm thinking a concise Work page and some informal, in process type of stuff under Blog, and maybe some sort of instagram feed.
